US 9

Enter a US, UK or EU men's size to see it in the other two systems.

Men’s shoe sizes run in three main systems. In US and UK sizes, the US number is usually one size bigger than the UK number, so a US 9 is a UK 8. European sizes are a different scale, so a US 9 is about an EU 42. Brands don’t all convert the same way, which is why this converter shows the two UK conventions side by side.

Men’s shoe size conversion chart

EU sizes come from a standard men’s chart. US half sizes fall between two EU sizes, because most European brands don’t make half sizes.

How US and UK shoe sizes compare

A men’s UK size is one full size below the US size: US 9 is UK 8. That is the standard for dress shoes, boots and loafers. Some sneaker brands use a half-size gap instead (US 9 is UK 8½), so for sneakers, check the brand’s own chart.

How to measure your foot

  1. Stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, heel touching the wall, wearing the socks you’d wear with the shoes.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe.
  3. Measure from the wall to the mark in centimeters or inches.
  4. Measure both feet and use the longer one.

Compare that length with the brand’s own size chart. Foot-length charts vary between brands, so treat any single chart as a starting point. Measure late in the day, when feet are at their largest.

Shoe size and style

Once you have the size, pick the shoe. See how to style Chelsea boots, what shoes to wear with chinos, and whether black shoes go with a navy suit.

Shoe Size FAQs

What is a US 10 in UK men’s sizes?

A men’s US 10 is a UK 9. In European sizes it’s about an EU 43.

What is EU 42 in US men’s sizes?

EU 42 is about a men’s US 9. Because EU sizes have no half sizes, an EU 42 can also fit a US 8½ or 9½ depending on the brand.

Is UK shoe size bigger than US?

No. For men, the UK number is smaller than the US number for the same shoe, usually by one size and at some brands by half a size.

Should I size up or down between two sizes?

Size up for boots and shoes you’ll wear with thick socks, and try both when you can. A shoe that’s slightly long can take an insole; one that’s too short can’t be fixed.
