Your face shape
Oval
Add a photo to measure your face, or pick your shape below if you already know it.
Your face shape decides which glasses, beard and haircut look most natural on you. This tool measures your face from one photo, names the closest of seven shapes, and shows the frame styles, beards and haircuts that suit it. It runs entirely in your browser: the photo is never uploaded, saved or seen by anyone.
How the face shape detector works
- It finds your face. Google’s open-source MediaPipe face model places about 470 points on the face in your photo, on your own device.
- It measures four things: the length of the face, and the width at the forehead, the cheekbones and the jaw.
- It compares them. A long face with straight sides reads as oblong, a wide jaw as square or triangle, a wide forehead with a narrow chin as heart, and so on.
- It suggests styles that balance those proportions, and lets you try frame shapes on your own photo.
Photos taken at an angle, with hair over the forehead or with a big smile, can shift the result. If the shape doesn’t look right, pick yours by hand and the suggestions update.
The seven face shapes
| Face shape | What it looks like | Widest point |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Longer than wide, softly rounded chin | Cheekbones, with forehead slightly wider than jaw |
| Round | About as long as wide, full cheeks, soft jaw | Cheekbones |
| Square | About as long as wide, strong angular jaw | Even across forehead, cheekbones and jaw |
| Oblong | Clearly longer than wide, straight sides | Even, on a long face |
| Heart | Wide forehead narrowing to a pointed chin | Forehead |
| Diamond | Narrow forehead and jaw, high cheekbones | Cheekbones |
| Triangle | Narrow forehead, wide jaw | Jaw |
How to find your face shape without a photo
Stand in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back. Compare three widths (forehead, cheekbones and jaw) and check whether your face is clearly longer than it is wide. The widest point and the length point to your shape in the table above.
Glasses, beards, haircuts and hats by face shape
The rule behind every suggestion is balance: add what the face shape lacks. Angular frames add structure to a round face, rounded frames soften a square jaw, and a beard with length at the chin makes a round face look longer.
| Face shape | Glasses | Beard | Haircut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | Most frames | Most styles | Most cuts |
| Round | Rectangle, square, browline | Goatee with chin strap, anchor beard | Height on top, short sides |
| Square | Round, aviator | Circle beard, Van Dyke, short stubble | Short classic cuts |
| Oblong | Deeper square frames, aviator, browline | Full beard with rounded edges, mutton chops | Side part, fringe, no height on top |
| Heart | Aviator, round, light frames | Full beard, chin beard | Medium length, swept |
| Diamond | Browline, round | Garibaldi, chin strap with moustache | Fringe, textured crop |
| Triangle | Browline, aviator | Short boxed beard, heavy stubble | Volume on top and sides |
Hats by face shape
The best hat for your face shape follows the same rule: a taller crown makes a round face look longer, a lower crown and wider brim shorten a long face, and a rounded crown softens a square jaw.
| Face shape | Best hats | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Most hats: fedora, trilby, flat cap, baseball cap | Hats pulled over the brows |
| Round | Fedora or trilby with a taller crown, structured baseball cap | Round crowns, tight beanies |
| Square | Fedora with a rounded crown, newsboy cap, slouchy beanie | Boxy, flat-topped hats |
| Oblong | Flat cap, newsboy cap, pork pie hat, low-crown fedora | Tall crowns, hats worn far back |
| Heart | Trilby, flat cap, baseball cap, beanie | Very wide brims |
| Diamond | Fedora with a medium brim, newsboy cap, beanie | Small hats worn tight |
| Triangle | Wide-brim fedora, newsboy cap, beanie with volume | Small, narrow-brim hats |

Is my photo safe?
Yes. The face model downloads to your browser and runs there. Your photo is never sent to Men’s Array or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Face Shape FAQs
What is the most common face shape for men?
Oval is usually described as the most common face shape and the most balanced, which is why most glasses, beards and haircuts suit it. Many men sit between two shapes, so it is worth reading the suggestions for both.
What glasses suit a round face?
Rectangle, square and browline frames suit a round face best. Their angles add structure and make the face look longer. Round and small frames make a round face look rounder.
What beard suits a round face?
A beard with length at the chin suits a round face, such as a goatee with an extended chin strap, an anchor beard or a short beard with defined edges. Keep the sides short.
What haircut suits an oblong face?
A side part, a crew cut or a cut with a fringe suits an oblong face. Avoid height on top and very short sides, which make a long face look longer.
What hat suits a round face?
A hat with height and angles suits a round face best: a fedora or trilby with a taller crown and a crisp brim, or a structured baseball cap. Wear it slightly tilted. Round crowns and tight beanies make a round face look rounder.
Can a face shape change?
Face shape mostly follows bone structure, but weight changes and age can soften or sharpen the jaw and cheeks. A beard also changes how your face shape reads, so run the tool again with and without one.
