What to wear
Black tie
Pick the dress code on your invitation, or the occasion, to see the jacket, shirt, tie, trousers and shoes it calls for.
A dress code tells you how formal to dress. From most to least formal, the main US dress codes for men are white tie, black tie, black tie optional (often printed as “formal”), business formal, cocktail and semi-formal, beach formal, business casual, smart casual, dressy casual and casual. Pick the one on your invitation in the decoder above to see the jacket, shirt, tie, trousers and shoes it calls for, or start from the occasion if the invitation doesn’t say.

What does each dress code mean for men?
White tie
White tie is the most formal dress code: a black tailcoat, a white piqué waistcoat, a stiff-fronted wing-collar shirt and a white bow tie, with black trousers carrying two stripes. It appears at state dinners, some galas and a few very formal weddings, almost always in the evening. Most men rent it.
Black tie
Black tie means a tuxedo: a black or midnight blue dinner jacket with satin or grosgrain lapels, matching trousers with a single stripe, a white tuxedo shirt and a black bow tie. A black business suit is not a tuxedo, so at a strict black tie event it reads as underdressed.
Black tie optional and formal
Black tie optional means a tuxedo is welcome but a dark suit is just as correct. Wear a black, charcoal or navy suit with a white shirt, a dark silk tie and black oxfords. On most US invitations, “formal” means the same thing. For the suit itself, see how to wear a black suit.
Business formal
Business formal, also called business professional, is the traditional office suit: navy or charcoal, a white or light blue shirt, a conservative tie and polished oxfords. It is the standard for corporate interviews, client meetings and banking or law offices. Pair the tie with help from ties for a charcoal suit.
Cocktail and semi-formal
Cocktail and semi-formal both mean a suit, usually with a tie, and many hosts use them for the same thing. Cocktail leaves more room for color and pattern in the tie and pocket square. Semi-formal leans a little more conservative, with darker suits in the evening and lighter ones in the day. Navy is the safest single choice, and black shoes with a navy suit covers the shoes.
Beach formal
Beach formal means a summer-weight suit in a light color, such as tan, sand, light grey or light blue, in linen, cotton or tropical wool. The tie is optional and loafers replace oxfords. Dark wool suits and tuxedos are out.
Business casual
Business casual means office clothes without the suit and tie: chinos or wool trousers, a button-down or dress shirt with an open collar, leather shoes, and a blazer or smart knit when you want one. Dark jeans are fine only where the office allows them. See slacks vs dress pants for the trousers.
Smart casual
Smart casual means casual clothes worn neatly: dark jeans or chinos, an oxford shirt, polo or fine knit, and loafers, boots or clean leather sneakers, often with an unstructured blazer. The full rules and outfits are in our smart casual guide for men.
Dressy casual
Dressy casual sits one step above casual: chinos or dress trousers, a collared shirt, leather shoes and an optional blazer, with no tie. When in doubt, chinos, a button-down and loafers are always right. For colors, see what to wear with khaki pants.
Casual
Casual means everyday clothes, clean and well fitted: jeans or chinos, a T-shirt, polo or casual shirt, and sneakers or boots. At a wedding or family event it still means neat, so skip shorts unless it is a beach or backyard event.
What to wear when the invitation has no dress code
When the invitation names no dress code, wear a navy or charcoal suit with a white or light blue shirt and a tie for an evening event, and drop the tie or switch to a blazer and chinos for a daytime or relaxed one. A suit is easy to dress down on the day by taking off the tie, while a casual outfit can’t be dressed up. If the event is at a venue, its website or the host can tell you how formal it is.
Dress codes by occasion
| Occasion | Usual dress code | Safe outfit |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding guest | What the invitation says; semi-formal if none | Navy or grey suit, tie, leather shoes |
| Job interview (corporate) | Business formal | Navy or charcoal suit, tie, oxfords |
| Job interview (tech or creative) | Smart casual, one step above the team | Blazer, collared shirt, chinos, loafers |
| Office, day to day | Business casual in many US offices | Chinos, button-down, loafers |
| Funeral | Dark and conservative | Black, charcoal or navy suit, white shirt, dark tie |
| Cocktail or holiday party | Cocktail | Suit with a tie that has more color |
| Date night | Smart casual | Dark jeans or chinos, shirt or knit, blazer |
| Graduation (guest) | Business casual | Chinos, collared shirt, optional blazer |

Dress Code FAQs
What is the most formal dress code for men?
White tie is the most formal dress code for men. It calls for a black tailcoat, a white waistcoat, a wing-collar shirt and a white bow tie. Black tie, which means a tuxedo, is the next level down and is far more common.
What is the difference between black tie and black tie optional?
Black tie means a tuxedo is expected. Black tie optional means a tuxedo is welcome, but a dark suit with a white shirt and a dark tie is just as correct. At black tie optional events, most men wear the suit.
Is cocktail attire the same as semi-formal?
Cocktail attire and semi-formal are close, and many hosts use them for the same thing: a suit, usually with a tie. Cocktail leaves more room for color and pattern, while semi-formal leans more conservative and shifts lighter for daytime events.
Can I wear a black suit to a black tie event?
A black suit is not a tuxedo: it has no satin lapels and no stripe down the trousers, so at a strict black tie event it looks underdressed. At a black tie optional or formal event, a black suit with a white shirt and a dark tie is fine.
Can you wear jeans for business casual?
Dark jeans with no rips are acceptable for business casual only where the office allows them. Chinos or wool trousers are the safer choice, especially in your first weeks or for client meetings.
What does “formal attire” mean on an invitation?
On most US invitations, “formal attire” means the same as black tie optional. A tuxedo is welcome, and a dark suit with a tie is expected. If the host wants tuxedos only, the invitation will say black tie.
What does “festive attire” mean for men?
Festive attire means cocktail attire with a seasonal or playful touch. Wear a suit or a blazer and trousers, and add one festive piece: a velvet blazer, a burgundy or green tie, or a patterned pocket square.
